Historic Preservation

Restoration With Integrity

We first do an on-site assessment of the building to make sure it is a building that we can save. We then develop a plan and estimate based on our assessment and past experience preserving old timber-frames. We also draw on Scratch Builders owner’s experience in preservation, which goes all the way back to a Historic Preservation degree at the North Bennett Street School in Boston.

Historic Timber Frame Preservation

Our approach to historic timber frame preservation is very simple: save as much historic timber frame fabric as possible. We want to save as much as we can, to preserve the original look, feel, and intent of the historic timber frame. In severe cases of rot and degradation we have to take the timber frame completely apart, and bring it back to our shop to repair it. In cases like this we document every piece of timber in the building and make a 3d Cad model, to ensure that the project runs smoothly and all pieces are accounted for.

Our team at Scratch Builders can work to the secretary of interior's guidelines for preservation, but we do often find that clients like some flexibility in their approach. We essentially look to provide our expertise, and let the client decide what tract they want to take.
